South Dakota

Overview

Famous for Mount Rushmore, where the president's faces are carved in the rock, South Dakota is rich in sweeping vistas and Native American history.

Take in the dramatic desert-like landscapes with colourful buttes, spires, and canyons in the Badlands National Park. Drive the Badlands Loop State Scenic Byway, keeping your eyes open for an array of local wildlife including bison, eagles and coyotes.

Step back into the days of the Wild West at the historic town of Deadwood and perhaps catch a re-enactment of a Wild Bill shoot out! Discover the beauty of the Wild West at Custer State Park, where buffalo still graze the open plains and lakes mirror the reflections of the nearby granite peaks. Or venture into the Black Hills and peek into the past in the fascinating museums at Crazy Horse Memorial.

Deep below the golden prairie in western South Dakota is one of the longest and most complex cave systems in the world. Wind Cave is considered a sacred place for Native Americans. Take a guided tour of this unusual National Park.
